- Start your application
At age 15½ or older, begin your application online with the Virginia DMV. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.)
- Take the Diagnostic Test

- Clear your mistakes
Open the Challenge Bank and fix every missed question, especially repeat misses.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 85% or higher.

VA DMV permit test - what to expect
The Virginia permit test has 40 questions. You must get 34 correct (85%) to pass.
- Where: Any Virginia DMV office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: If you’re under 18, you must wait 15 days before retaking the exam. If you’re 18 or older, you may only take the test once per day (each attempt requires the standard testing fee).
- Commonly missed: road sign recognition (warning, regulatory, and guide signs), legal blood alcohol limits and DUI rules.
