- Start your application
At age 15 or older, begin your application online with the Florida DMV. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.)
- Take the required course
Complete the Driver Education Traffic Survey (DETS) course online if under 18, or the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course online otherwise.
- Take the Diagnostic Test
Check your starting level.
- Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)
Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions work best.
- Clear your mistakes

- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week

- Drive with a licensed adult 21+ in the front seat
- Wear your seat belt

FL DMV permit test - what to expect
The Florida permit test has 50 questions. You must get 40 correct (80%) to pass.
- Where: Any Florida DMV office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake after 48 hours.
- Commonly missed: headlight usage and when to turn them on, using turn signals and proper merging.
